San Diego elected leaders gathered on Monday to commemorate Juneteenth as an official paid city holiday, according to a press release. Mayor Todd Gloria and members of the City Council celebrated the day at the Fourth District Senior Resource Center in Encanto with cultural performances and food to honor the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans. The ceremony took place at the center's annual fair that has been hosted for 27 years. Those in attendance included hundreds of San Diego community members.
