San Diegans throughout the county will celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday during events at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and local schools. In 2019, Indigenous Peoples Day was established as a holiday replacing Columbus Day on the second Monday of October in California when Gov. Gavin om signed a proclamation that in part reads that 'Instead of commemorating conquest today, we recognize resilience.' In 2021, President Joe Biden became the first U.S. president to formally recognize the holiday nationwide through his own proclamation .
