San Diego elected leaders celebrated Juneteenth on Monday as an official paid holiday for city employees, according to a press release. Several other cities in California have also chosen to recognize the federal holiday on June 19th, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. Mayor Todd Gloria and members of the San Diego City Council held the signing ceremony at the Fourth District Senior Resource Center in Encanto, which has hosted annual Juneteenth celebrations since 2007. Cultural activities and food services that reflect the significance of Juneteenth were planned for the event, including traditional African American music, dance and storytelling performances.
